Tennis Picks Up Key SLC Road Win
April 13, 2013
Four of the six singles matches went to a third set, but the Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack tennis team held on to defeat McNeese State, 5-2, Saturday in Lake Charles, La. SFA moves to 10-10 (.500) on the season and 5-2 (.714) in Southland Conference play, remaining a game back of Southeastern Louisiana.
The Ladyjacks came out in usual fashion taking the first lead of the match by winning the doubles point. The team of freshman Margot de Haan and junior Laura Servise picked up an easy 8-2 victory at No. 2 doubles, but Lamar took the match at the No. 3 spot. That left the deciding match in the hands of sophomores Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca. The Ladyjacks duo outlasted McNeese State's top doubles team to record a 9-7 victory and secure the doubles point.
The battle at No. 1 doubles was only a sign of things to come in the singles competition. After the two schools split the outcomes at No. 5 and 6 singles in straight sets, the last four matches went the distance. Lorca, de Haan and freshman Kateryna Bugayenko all picked up three-set victories to secure the 5-2 win for the Ladyjacks. After dropping the first set, 6-7, de Haan kept her composure to rally and take the final two sets at No. 3 singles.
The Ladyjacks return to action Sunday when they face Lamar. The match against the Lady Cardinals is slated to begin at noon from Beaumont, Texas.
