Top-Seeded `Jacks Advance to Semifinals
April 26, 2012
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The No. 46-ranked Stephen F. Austin women's tennis team recorded an easy 4-0 victory over eighth-seeded UTSA, 4-0, Thursday afternoon in the opening round of the Southland Conference Championships at the Schlief Tennis Complex. The `Jacks improve to 21-4 on the season, setting a new program record for wins.
"UTSA is a strong team, so we knew we needed to get out to a quick start," said head coach Patrick Sullivan. "When you are facing the potential of playing three matches in three days it is important to not let teams hang around when you have a chance to put them away. We were lucky enough to start strong and get chances to put them away in both singles and doubles and we took advantage of it."
SFA followed the same script from the regular season winning the doubles point to take the first lead of the match, in front of the largest crowd of the season. The `Jacks picked up 8-2 wins at Nos. 2 and 3 singles to force the start of singles play.
Senior Alina Shazhko tacked on a quick second point with her 6-1, 6-2, victory over the Roadrunners' Isabelle Johnsson at No. 2 singles. Freshman Tereza Bekerova quickly followed with a 7-5, 6-2, victory over UTSA's Micaela Silva at No. 3 singles. Minutes later freshman Julia Lorca ended the match when she posted a 6-1, 6-2, decision over Natalie Hand at No. 6 singles.
The regular-season conference champions return to action Friday at 2 p.m. to face the winner of the No. 4 Northwestern State/No. 5 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi match. The results from the morning session of the tournament saw one upset. The tournament's seventh-seed, Sam Houston State, sent the No. 2 overall seed Texas State home early with a 4-3 decision. In the other match No. 3 Texas-Arlington had no problem dispensing No. 6 Lamar, 4-0.
