Top 25 SFA Moments of 2012-13 - No. 25
June 10, 2013
NACOGDOCHES, Texas - Now that the school year is over, and before we begin the 2013-14 academic year, SFA athletics wanted to take a look back at the Top 25 Moments from the 2012-13 season.
Moment No. 25 comes from the Ladyjack tennis team. The Ladyjacks recorded their biggest win of the season, and arguably one of the biggest victories of the athletics schedule, when they rallied to knock off nationally ranked Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, 4-3.
For all the celebration that took place at the end of the day due to SFA’s victory, it actually started out very slowly. The match was originally scheduled to begin at 2 p.m., but due to rain the match was moved to 5 p.m. In addition to the wet conditions and the late start, the Ladyjacks fell behind 1-0 to A&M-Corpus Christi. The Islanders came out strong winning all three doubles matches carrying the momentum into singles play.
The Ladyjacks quickly regrouped after the intermission. Sophomores Malena Gordo and Julia Lorca made quick work of their opponents, at No. 1 and 2 singles, to give SFA its first lead, 2-1. It was a lead the Ladyjacks wouldn't surrender. Freshman Valeria Terentyeva added to the lead with a 6-0, 6-3, win over the Islanders' Chelsea Horan at No. 5 singles.
Terentyeva's victory put SFA in the drivers seat, needing only one victory in the final three matches for the win, but all three of those matches were forced to third sets. The drama was over almost as quickly as it got started.
For the second time in as many days junior Laura Servise stepped up to play the role of hero. She battled back from a first-set loss to force a third, and made quick work of her opponent in the final two sets, 5-7, 6-3, 6-3. The victory kept SFA undefeated in conference play, and It was the first setback of the season for the Islanders.
