Seniors Keep Dream Of SLC Title Alive With Sweep Of UT-Arlington

Nov. 7, 2007

Box Score

NACOGDOCHES, Texas - The Ladyjack volleyball team had to have a win to keep control of its own destiny for a Southland Conference title and did just that by sweeping UT-Arlington for the seventh straight time since 2004, 3-0 (30-27, 30-27, 30-19) at Johnson Coliseum.

Senior JJ Jones went over the 5,000-assist mark for her career with a 51-assist effort for the Ladyjacks (24-7, 14-1), marking only the second time this season that a Ladyjack has had over 50 assists in a match this season. On top of that, it was the most assists any player in the Southland Conference has had in a three-game match in 2007.

She would pick up 12 of those assists in a hard-fought first game as SFA never took the lead from UTA (19-10, 11-4) until the 21-20 mark, before going on to take the game 30-27. Traci Rohde would knock home five of her 12 kills in the first game, and also two blocks. Her first block of the night was her 464th of her career, pushing her out of a tie with Brittany Burton to move into sole possession of second place on the all-time SFA list.

The second stanza would see Lauren Railey come alive with seven of the Ladyjacks 22 kills in game two; however, UTA would hit at a .349 clip for the game to keep things close behind eight kills by Bianca Sauls. But SFA had too much offense, eventually pulling out a 30-27 win to go in 2-0 at the half.

SFA would go for the jugular in the third frame, landing 24 kills to UTA's 12 in a convincing 30-19 win to close things out in front of its home crowd. Jami Hill would register 15 digs in the frame, and 31 for the match. It is the second time this season - both times against UTA - that she has tallied 31 kills, the most by any SLC player in a three-game match.

On the night, SFA would out kill the Mavs by a 66-48 count led by Shelly Swendig's 16 kills and four blocks. Railey was right behind her with 15 kills and picked up her 13th double-double of the year by totaling 15 digs as well. Jones would also pick up a double-double, going for 14 digs with her 51 assists.

The Ladyjacks return to the court for their home finale on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. against Texas State for senior night. A win for SFA will clinch at least a share of its fourth consecutive Southland Conference title.
