Aug 21, 2013
FRISCO, Texas - The Stephen F. Austin Ladyjack volleyball team was picked third and fifth in the Southland Conference preseason polls conducted by coaches and sports information directors released Wednesday by league officials.
SFA earned 94 points and one first-place vote in the coaches poll, and 83 in the SID poll.
"For us, we know what this team is capable of," SFA head volleyball coach Debbie Humphreys said. "Our focus is going to be on us and playing what we call SFA volleyball. We want to play good quality volleyball every match when we step out on the court and with the talent level of this group, if we do that, the outcome is going to take care of itself."
The Ladyjacks finished fourth in the regular season in 2012, before being narrowly eliminated by regular season and eventual SLC tournament champion Central Arkansas. SFA finished 22-12 overall, giving coach Humphreys her 17th 20-plus-win season in her 25-year tenure.
The Ladyjacks return nine letterwinners from a season ago, including three starters, highlighted by first-team All-SLC outside hitter Jill Ivy. The Katy, Texas, native, led SFA and finished sixth in conference with 400 kills, averaging 3.03 per set, and finished second with 96 blocks as a sophomore. Sophomore Tori Bates joined Ivy on the preseason All-SLC teams released Tuesday, Aug. 20. Bates, who earned a second team preseason selection, led the team with 42 services aces, while finishing second with five double-doubles and third on the team in both kills (301) and digs (255).
The two outside hitters are joined by fellow letterwinners Jacque Allen, Janet Hill, Paige Holland, Leslie Jackson, Keeley Kainer, OJ Olson and Amanda Rister. Laiken Britt is also returning, coming off a redshirt season in 2012.
The Ladyjacks open the 2013 season on the road, traveling to Hattiesburg, Miss. for the Southern Mississippi Tournament Aug. 30-31.
