SFA Drops Pair In Miami (OH) Tournament

Aug. 30, 2008

Saint Louis Final Stats

Miami (OH) Final Stats

OXFORD,Ohio - The Ladyjacks dropped a pair of matches on Saturday to teams picked to win their conference, falling to Saint Louis 3-0 (25-22, 25-16, 22-21), and Miami (OH) 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-23) in the Best Western Classic.

SFA (1-2) placed a pair of players on the all-tournament team, seniors Lauren Railey and Shelly Swendig, but were unable to back up Friday's win over Western Carolina with another win in Ohio.

Railey had the first breakout offensive night for the Ladyjacks on the year in the nightcap against Miami (OH), finding the mark for a match-high 17 kills in only three games against the Redhawks - the defending MAC Tournament champions. Swendig was a consistent force all weekend, following her 10-kill performance against WCU on Friday with 12 kills and only three errors in the two matches on Saturday.

Against Saint Louis, the Ladyjacks kept things close in the first set, drawing to within a point at 23-22, but was eventually hobbled by a .115 hitting percentage for the set. The Billikens dominated the second before capturing the four-point win in the final frame.

SFA failed to put anyone in double-figure kills for the afternoon, with Railey leading the way with nine. Swendig and Ashley Bailey once again provided a consistent offensive tandem, putting away seven kills apiece with only one error between them.

The evening match saw the Ladyjacks struggle early on, including only hitting -.057 with 14 errors in the middle set of the night. SFA only managed to hit .116 for the match, compared to Miami's .243 clip, with the Redhawks picking up 10 more digs than SFA as well. Whitney Schott added 27 more assists on the night, giving her 73 in three matches to start the season.

SFA continues the early part of its season next Friday with a pair of matches versus New Orleans and Montana before a Saturday match with SMU. All matches are part of the SMU Tournament.
